TikTok sells 8 ad formats. Most DTC brands only need two of them.
The rest are either priced for enterprise media buys or built on infrastructure you probably don't have yet. Choosing the wrong one wastes budget before a single impression runs.
Formats split into three buying tiers: auction, reservation, and bundled package. Your budget decides your tier before any other decision gets made, and your objective decides the format inside that tier.
For most brands spending $500 to $50,000 a month, the answer is in-feed plus Spark Ads. Here's what every other format does, what it costs, and when it's worth stepping up.

All the types of TikTok ads split into three buying tiers, and the tier decides which formats show up in your account at all.
In-feed ads, Spark Ads, Dynamic Showcase Ads, and Instant Pages all run through TikTok Ads Manager on CPM or oCPM bidding. You set a budget and the algorithm finds the delivery. The floor is $50 a day per campaign and $20 per ad group. Almost every DTC brand operates entirely in this tier.
TopView and Brand Takeover are flat daily buys booked in advance through a TikTok sales rep, starting around $50,000 a day. You're not bidding against other advertisers. You're paying a fixed rate for guaranteed first-impression placement, and there's no self-serve path to it.
Branded Hashtag Challenges and Branded Effects are sold as campaigns rather than media. Fixed price, defined run dates, TikTok account management and creative development attached.

Tier 1 · Auction | Tier 2 · Reservation | Tier 3 · Bundled package | |
|---|---|---|---|
Formats | In-feed, Spark Ads, Dynamic Showcase Ads, Instant Pages | TopView, Brand Takeover | Branded Hashtag Challenge, Branded Effects |
How you buy | CPM / oCPM bidding | Flat daily rate, booked ahead | Negotiated campaign package |
Entry cost | $50/day per campaign | $50,000+/day | $150,000+/campaign |
Access | Self-serve in Ads Manager | TikTok managed service | TikTok account team |
Can you pause it | Any time | No, dates are locked | No, dates are locked |
The tiers differ in more than price. They differ in what you can change once the campaign is running.
An auction campaign can be paused any time. If the cost per purchase looks wrong at 11am, you turn it off and move that budget to an ad group that's working.
A reservation buy is paid upfront for fixed dates. If the creative underperforms on the day, you can't pause it, move the dates, or get the money back.
So if you spend under $50,000 a day, you're in the auction tier. The only thing left to decide is which auction format fits your objective.
Your budget decides the tier. Inside that tier, two things decide the format: what you want the campaign to do, and what you already have set up on your side.
Setup is the part brands forget about. Two auction formats, Dynamic Showcase Ads and Shopping Ads, only work if you already have a product catalog and a Pixel recording purchases every week. Without those, you can open them in Ads Manager and still get nothing out of them.
Find your monthly spend in the table below and start with the formats on that row.

Primary objective | Recommended formats | Why | |
|---|---|---|---|
$500–$2,000/month | Consideration / conversion | In-feed + Instant Pages | Auction floor; Instant Pages cut the bounce from slow mobile sites |
$2,000–$10,000/month | Consideration / conversion | In-feed + Spark Ads | The 44% CVR lift on Spark Ads pays for the influencer pipeline |
$10,000–$50,000/month | Conversion + catalog | Spark Ads + in-feed + DSA (catalog and Pixel ready) | Full auction stack; DSA needs 50+ weekly purchase events |
$50,000+/day | Awareness / launch | TopView + Branded Effects | Reservation tier, no self-serve access |
$150,000+/campaign | Brand experience | BHC + Branded Effects + TopView | Stacked premium buy with TikTok creative support |
For most DTC brands spending $2,000 to $50,000 a month, the right stack is Spark Ads plus in-feed. That's not a beginner answer. Spark Ads beat in-feed by a wide enough margin that a third format is a distraction until your Spark Ads are performing as well as they can.
Look at the table again and every row under $50,000 a day lands on the same two formats. The only thing that changes as you spend more is the split between them. At $2,000 a month, most of the budget goes to in-feed testing with videos you own. At $30,000 a month, most of it should be running influencer posts as Spark Ads.

In-feed ads appear in the For You feed between organic videos. Autoplay with sound on, skippable, and they carry the same actions as organic posts: likes, saves, shares, comments, follows.
Average CPM is $9.16 with a 0.84% CTR across verticals. Those are the numbers your first campaign gets measured against, and the full set of TikTok ads benchmarks breaks them down by industry.
There are two in-feed variants worth knowing.
Auction-based, appears anywhere in the feed, and scales to any budget. This is the default when you build an in-feed campaign in Ads Manager.
The premium first in-feed slot, guaranteed to be the first ad in a user's session. Same creative specs, higher CPM than standard, far below TopView. It's the closest thing to a launch placement that doesn't need a $50,000 daily commitment.

Always-on conversion campaigns and creative testing at any budget. It's the only format that runs on video you own outright, so UGC ads filmed for your ad account are enough to start. Nobody has to post anything on their own profile.
Compare them on 3-second view rate and CTR, not on cost per purchase. At $100 a day you won't get enough purchases for CPA to mean anything.
Then take the two best hooks, shoot three new versions of each, and run the test again. One creator can film all five variants from a single brief, which is why how to hire UGC creators who take direction well matters more than the size of the test budget.
The $50 daily floor is what TikTok accepts, not what the algorithm needs. An ad group needs around 50 conversions a week to get out of the learning phase. At a $25 cost per purchase, that's about $179 a day, nearly 9x the minimum.
So at $500 a month, don't expect in-feed to work as a performance channel. Use it to find out which hooks work and keep your conversion budget where it's already profitable.
An in-feed ad that looks like an ad gets scrolled past in under two seconds. The ones that hold attention open on one of three things:
Never a product shot, never a logo.
Send the TikTok ad specs to the creator before they shoot, because a video that's a second too long or a few pixels off gets rejected before it spends anything. If you want hooks that have already worked in the feed, TikTok ad examples sorts real ads by type.
Spark Ads run an existing organic post as a paid ad from the poster's own handle.
This is the one TikTok format that needs someone with an audience. A UGC creator films for your ad account and never posts anything; an influencer publishes to their own followers, and it's that audience the format borrows from.
That's the structural difference from in-feed. TikTok Spark Ads inherit the likes, comments, shares, and follower count the post already earned, plus the performance history TikTok's algorithm has built on it. A standard in-feed ad starts at zero, and the algorithm treats it as unproven content.
The gap is not subtle.

Standard in-feed | Spark Ads | |
|---|---|---|
Avg CPM | $9.16 | Around $11–12 |
Avg CTR | 0.84% | 2.0%+ |
Engagement | Baseline | +142% |
Full video completion | 33.5% | 78.3% |
Conversion rate | Baseline | +44% |
Runs from | Brand account | Influencer's handle |
Spark Ads get 142% higher engagement and a 44% higher conversion rate than standard in-feed, with 2.4x the CTR and a 78.3% full-video completion rate against 33.5% in matched sets. CPM runs a couple of dollars higher, in the $11 to $12 range against the TikTok CPM average, and the CTR and CVR lift covers that several times over on direct-response objectives.
What makes the difference is what a viewer sees before they decide whether to keep watching. A Spark Ad shows the influencer's name, their follower count, and the likes and comments the post already collected. If 300 people commented on the original, the ad shows 300 comments.
A brand upload shows none of that. It's a new video from an account the viewer doesn't follow, with an empty comment section, and it reads as an ad within a second.
There are two ways to run the format, and only one of them produces those numbers.
You put paid spend behind a video from your own brand account. It works, but your handle has no following behind it, so you lose most of what makes the format perform.
An influencer publishes the video on their own account, gives you authorisation, and you run that post as your ad. Every number in the table above comes from this version. What decides the outcome is which influencers you pick and how well you brief them, not how you buy the media.

Running Spark Ads at any scale means repeating the same loop: recruit influencers, brief them, get the content posted on their accounts, secure the rights, and put spend behind whatever performs.
Influee runs that loop for you, and the rights transfer with the content, so a post that does well organically can go straight into your ad account without a second negotiation.
Put three things in the brief:
Wording that covers all three: "Influencer grants Spark Ads authorisation for 30 days from posting, renewable on request, plus paid usage rights for the raw and edited video across TikTok and Meta for 12 months."
Sort this before the video goes up. Once a post takes off, the influencer knows what it's worth and the price changes.
The influencer generates a 7-day or 30-day code in TikTok Ads Manager and sends it to you. When the window closes, the ad stops running with no warning and no notification, which is one of the most common causes of TikTok ads not spending. Put the expiry date in your calendar the day you launch.

Four formats cost more than anything in the auction tier. Most DTC brands never buy them, but it helps to know what they do and what they'd cost.
The first thing a user sees when they open the app. Full-screen video, capped at one per user per day.
CTR runs between 12% and 16%, roughly 15x standard in-feed, because there's nothing else on screen.
It's a flat-rate reservation with no self-serve access. Buy it when first-impression reach is the goal, not cost per purchase.
The same app-open placement, limited to a static image or a 3 to 5 second video.
Spend is moving away from standalone Brand Takeover toward TopView paired with Branded Effects, which holds attention longer.
You launch a hashtag, users make videos around it, and the challenge page collects them.
It has the highest engagement rate of any TikTok format and leaves you with a library of creator content afterwards. It hasn't declined in performance, it's been priced out of the mid-market.
Custom AR filters, stickers, and overlays people apply to their own videos. It's the participation mechanism for a Branded Hashtag Challenge and rarely worth running on its own.

Three formats arrived in 2026 and all three require direct TikTok contact:
None of these are pitchable at DTC budgets yet. Know they exist, check back when your awareness line has its own budget.
Two auction formats depend on your store setup rather than your budget. Both are available at any spend level, and neither does anything for you without the setup behind it.
An in-feed video with product cards under it, so people can browse and buy without leaving the app.
That in-app checkout is the whole advantage. TikTok Shop converts at 4.7% against 1.9% on other social commerce platforms, because the trip from discovery to purchase never leaves the feed.
DSA builds personalised ads automatically from your product catalog. It's TikTok's version of Meta's Dynamic Product Ads, with one difference that catches teams out: TikTok DSA makes video, not static images.
Port a Meta setup across as it is and you get catalog stills in a video feed, which is exactly the kind of ad people scroll past.
Three things have to be in place first:
Two out of three isn't enough.

For brands with TikTok Shop live, Shopping Ads plus Spark Ads is the strongest combination on the platform. Spark Ads bring the discovery and the trust, Shopping Ads close the purchase in-app, and the same video does both jobs at once.
Three situations cover almost every brand reading this.
New to TikTok ads ($500–$5,000/month). Start with in-feed. Test five to ten creative variants with different hook angles, learn what your audience responds to, and hold off on an influencer pipeline until you know which angle works. Budget: $50 a day minimum, more if you want the algorithm to learn anything.
Ready to scale ($2,000–$50,000/month). Add Spark Ads as your primary format. Brief influencers, secure the rights, run their top-performing organic posts as ads. The 44% conversion lift compounds as spend grows, and a roster of influencers is cheaper per winning video than shooting more brand content in-house.
Planning a product launch ($50,000+/day). TopView for first-impression reach, paired with Branded Effects for a layered awareness moment. Plan four to eight weeks ahead, because major-market reservations get booked out and your creative deadline moves with them.
Format choice matters less than TikTok ad targeting, which decides whether the right people ever see the video.
Work out your TikTok ads cost against your own cost per purchase before you commit a monthly budget. A cheaper CPM means nothing if the CPA doesn't work at your margin.
Below $50,000 a day, Spark Ads is the format worth building around. Everything else is either the testing layer beneath it or a tier you can't buy into yet.

TikTok ad formats include in-feed ads, Spark Ads, Dynamic Showcase Ads, Instant Pages, TopView, Brand Takeover, Branded Hashtag Challenges, and Branded Effects. The first four run in the self-serve auction; the last four are reservation or package buys sold through TikTok's sales team.
The best TikTok ad format for DTC brands is Spark Ads, backed by in-feed for creative testing. Spark Ads outperform every other auction format on conversion, and in-feed gives you a cheap way to find the hooks worth boosting.
The difference between Spark Ads and in-feed ads is whose account the ad runs from. A Spark Ad runs from the influencer's profile and keeps the post's existing likes, comments, and performance history, while an in-feed ad is a fresh upload from your brand account that starts with nothing behind it.
TopView on TikTok costs $50,000 to $150,000 a day as a reservation buy through TikTok's managed service. Bookings go through a sales rep, and dates in major markets get taken weeks ahead, so plan the creative deadline around the reservation rather than the other way round.
Spark Ads deliver the best ROI for conversion campaigns, since the CTR and conversion advantage over in-feed outweighs a CPM that runs two to three dollars higher. TopView wins on reach per day and loses on cost per acquisition by a wide margin.
A Dynamic Showcase Ad is an auto-generated video ad built from your product catalog and matched to a user's browsing behaviour. It needs a TikTok Pixel with steady purchase volume, structured catalog data, and video assets tied to catalog entries.
You don't need a creator to run Spark Ads, because you can boost a post from your own brand account. You do need an influencer to get the performance numbers, since the advantage comes from their followers and the engagement their post already earned. A UGC creator films for your ad account instead, which is what in-feed ads run on.
The new TikTok ad formats in 2026 are Logo Takeover, Prime Time, and TopReach. All three are invite-only managed-service buys, so they're far outside the reach of a typical DTC advertising budget.
